My Philosophy of Music Education

My philosophy and goal is to enlighten and engage people in musical aspects of life, to fulfill their need to do music, and explore their creative ideas in and outside of music. Education is critical to being an effective human being, for the need for personal growth and knowledge is unending.

Knowledge is something that humans crave, and individuals have a responsibility to distribute their knowledge to their comrades. We must acquire as much knowledge as possible to fulfill our position in society. In turn, we must also provide this to children. We can not deny children knowledge; in fact we must stuff them with as much as they can mentally handle to optimize their learning experiences. It would put their future in jeopardy to do otherwise.

Everyone needs to have goals, or else one would never know what they are working toward. Challenges need to be provided to achieve these goals, for they would not be practical goals if they were easy to achieve. One's very existence, their purpose in life, would be done in a matter of minutes because their goals did not involve some kind of challenge. Challenge leads to self growth and enjoyment for overcoming that challenge. Before that challenge there needs to be existing information going into the situation. For this to occur, again, we need to have a thirst for knowledge and a thirst to share that knowledge with others. Everyone has something to teach. Everyone has a different way of grasping knowledge, and therefore it can not always be presented in a regurgitated way. There must be active participation in the creative thinking process, and different ways to approach each form of knowledge to maximize any given persons understanding. To achieve maximum understanding, the learner must also understand the goals of the teacher. In this way, goals for everyone are absolutely necessary.

Jacob Bronowski says "The most powerful drive in the ascent of man is his pleasure in his own skill" and that could be one of the most critical statements for the success of music education in a child. The feeling a child gets when they master something and do something right is very impressionable. Music is one of these pleasurable skill builders. Music can be found everywhere, and to understand it is to be involved as an active human being. Music is social, and will increase communication skills amongst people. It is a valued global skill.

Everything you do must involve some kind of purpose and have some praxial value. If an activity has no praxis, then there is just no point in doing it. If the activity does not involve self growth of obtaining knowledge, then it is not practical. For someone to truly understand something, they need to experience it for themselves. To grasp the praxis of anything, the learner requires that experience, as opposed to the explanations alone. Music is a universal language, accepted by people from all walks of life- wherever there are people, there is music. Therefore, it is practical, and so is the study and education of music. Music education is critical to self growth, as it uses the whole mind. Each part of the brain is developed in music education. The very essence and purpose of Music is its own definition of praxis.

Possibilities for human achievement are endless, and therefore knowledge and musical knowledge can always be at the persons use to satisfy their need for growth- including my own.
